Born in 1957, Jurmala, Latvia.
Graduated Jurmala Secondary School No. 4 in 1978 and Riga Medical Institute (presently Riga Stradins University) in 1983. Defended scientific thesis and obtained doctoral degree in 1989. Professor since from 2004, Full Member, Latvian Academy of Science2014.
Main fields of interest and research:
• Risk factors of cardio-vascular diseases, their detection and possible prevention
• Metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes, diabetes mellitus
• Arterial hypertension
• Calcium metabolism, vitamin D, osteoporosis, pathology of bone, muscles and connective tissues
• The significance and impact of viruses in internal medicine.
Board member of Latvian Association of Endocrinologists and Head of the Certification Commission of Latvian Association of Endocrinologists, chairman of Latvian Association of Internists, member of American Association of Diabetes and the International Association of Thrombosis and Coagulopathy.
15 doctoral theses have been completed and defended under my supervision. Author of books, scientific and popular scientific publications. Project leader and lead researcher in several National Research Programme, Latvian Council of Science projects and National Coordinator and Principal Investigator in clinical trials.
