Completed residency in General Surgery at Stanford University (1996-2001), fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at VCU (2001-2003), advanced fellowship in Heart Failure, Heart Transplantation, Mechanical Assist Devices and Lung Transplantation at Papworth Hospital, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK.

Clinical and research interests – Adult heart surgery, congestive heart failure, heart transplantation, mechanical assist devices and artificial heart, surgery for lung cancer, medical tourism.

Dr. Katlaps is the Honorary Consul of Republic of Latvia to the USA (State of Virginia). Board member of the Association of Latvian Doctors and Dentists (LAZA).
